Jan. 12--Inmates at a downtown Los Angeles jail started a fire Sunday, forcing officials to put the jail on lockdown, authorities said.
Inmates at the Men's Central Jail at the 400 block of Bauchet Street ignited various items just after 5:45 p.m., according to a release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
The Los Angeles Fire Department assisted the Sheriff's Department in extinguishing the blaze, which lasted about 10 minutes.
No inmates or deputies were injured in the fire.
The "disturbance" forced the Sheriff's Department to put the jail on lockdown, which restricts general movement of inmates, said Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Dep. Crystal Hernandez.
As of 11 p.m. Sunday, the jail remained on lockdown as sheriff's officials investigated the incident.
The fire at module 3100 forced 161 inmates to be relocated to another section of the jail.
