Oct. 30--Dozens of firefighters are battling a fire that engulfed the yard of a recycling center in South Los Angeles, authorities said.
The blaze broke out about 5:20 p.m. Thursday in the 1900 block of West Slauson Avenue, said Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The fire sent a large column of black smoke into the sky that was visible throughout Los Angeles.
As of 6:20 p.m., firefighters had gained the upper hand on the blaze but were struggling to put out some smoldering piles of recyclables in the yard, Scott said.
The city's Department of Water and Power was called to the scene in the Chesterfield Square neighborhood to assist with downed power lines, Scott said.
It is unclear whether any structures are threatened, and no injuries have been reported.
