BRIEF: Fire captain hospitalized for exertion after blaze erupts at San Pedro business

Nov. 02--A fire captain experienced extreme exertion and was hospitalized Monday morning after a blaze broke out in a San Pedro commercial building.

The fire erupted in the 500 block of South Pacific Avenue around 4:15 a.m. along a row of businesses, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The number of establishments affected was not immediately available, but it took 146 firefighters a little over two hours to extinguish the flames, Humphrey said.

"During the intense firefight against stubborn flames, one fire captain experienced extreme exertion," Humphrey said.

The fire captain was hospitalized and is listed in fair condition, Humphrey said. The 6th Street and Pacific Avenue intersection was closed to all traffic and was expected to remain that way for a few hours.

The cause of the fire was under investigation and there was no estimate yet on damage.
