BRIEF: Fire at 47th Street Station delays Metra Electric trains

Nov. 05--A fire at Metra Electric's 47th Street Hyde Park-Kenwood Station late Tuesday morning delayed several trains and may cause the cancellation of some trains in the afternoon, officials said.

There were no reports of injuries in the fire, which broke out around 11:20 a.m. and was out by a little after noon, Fire Department spokesman Chief Juan Hernandez said.

Service resumed but trains initially were moving at a walking pace because of debris on two tracks, said Meg Reile, a spokeswoman for Metra.

About 11:20 a.m., the crew on a Metra train noticed the platform smoldering, and soon after a crew on a Canadian National freight train going by reported a fire, Reile said.

One train that was stopped at Millennium Station has been cancelled, and other trains were running late, according to Metra's website.

Trains later in the afternoon were not affected.
