BRIEF: Police: Boy, 14, fatally stabbed brother, 16, during fight

Jan. 22--A 14-year-old boy stabbed his 16-year-old brother to death as their mother tried to stop them from fighting, according to South Chicago Heights police.

The 14-year-old grabbed a 12-inch knife from the kitchen and stabbed his brother in the back Wednesday morning, according to South Chicago Heights police Chief Bill Joyce.

Officers arrived at the home in the 100 block of West 29th Street around 7:15 a.m. and found the boys' sister trying to give CPR to the 16-year-old, Larry Miles, police said. The 14-year-old fled but was escorted back home by his grandfather a short time later, police said.

Larry was pronounced dead at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday in the emergency room of St. James Hospital and Health Center in Chicago Heights, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

"It's a tragic event," Joyce said. "Any loss of young life is a tragedy, and I think the tragedy is even compounded when it's at the hands of a sibling."

Joyce said detectives were working with the Cook County state's attorney's office but no charges have been announced.

The 14-year-old boy was released into his grandfather's custody as the investigation continued.
