Nov. 29--Demonstrators in San Francisco shattered store windows in the downtown tourist and shopping district during a march Friday night to protest the Ferguson, Mo., grand jury decision.
The protesters tried to disrupt the annual Union Square tree-lighting ceremony at the height of one of the busiest shopping days of the year, but were turned back by San Francisco police, Sgt. Monica Macdonald said.
She added that the holiday tradition went off without a hitch.
The march continued into the Mission District, where there were scattered reports of broken windows and bottles and rocks thrown at officers, Macdonald said.
Protesters, who headed out from Market Street and the Embarcadero at 6:30 p.m., were still marching at 9 p.m., she said.
There have been no reported arrests or injuries, Macdonald said, adding that other San Francisco protests since since the Missouri grand jury's announcement Monday have been peaceful.
The jury declined to indict Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson for the killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, sparking protests and sporadic violence across the country.
