Dec. 09--A Cicero man has been charged with bank robbery after police found him trying to escape on a bus after a TCF Bank was robbed in southwest suburban Bedford Park, authorities say.
According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, a man later identified as David Stallings, 55, entered the bank at 7400 S. Cicero Ave. shortly after 4 p.m. Friday and approached a teller. The man pulled out a small handgun and demanded cash in the form of large bills, the FBI said.
After the teller handed over cash, including a bill with a tracking device, the man took off on foot, the complaint said. Police tracked him to the area of 76th Street and Cicero Avenue. When officers stopped traffic at that intersection to check vehicles, they found a man matching the robber's description on a bus, the FBI said.
When officers approached the man, he allegedly told them he had a gun in his jacket but that it was not real. Police later found a large amount of cash in the man's pants pockets.
Stallings was charged with one count of bank robbery. He appeared Friday in federal court, where he was ordered held until his next court appearance.
Stallings faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
