Aug. 24--Two people were killed and several others injured when a big rig collided with a sport utility vehicle on the 405 Freeway in Van Nuys, shutting down the northbound lanes for hours and snarling weekend traffic, authorities said.
The accident was reported about 12:45 p.m. near the Sherman Way on-ramp, said Officer Monica Posada of the California Highway Patrol. All five northbound lanes were initially closed down, Posada said.
By 5:39 p.m., however, all northbound lanes had been reopened, the CHP said on its Twitter account.
One of the five people in the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. He was identified as a man who was traveling with his wife and three children.
One of the children was later pronounced dead at a hospital, authorities said. The other victims were being treated for injuries at the hospital.
The three people who were traveling in the big-rig were also transported to the hospital. All were listed in fair condition.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
