Jan. 07--As "Mike and Molly" began its sixth and likely final season Wednesday night, fans took to social media to try to save the CBS series about a Chicago police officer and his wife.
"Mike and Molly rocks. CBS is nuts for canceling," wrote one Twitter user.
The show's stars announced in December the series was canceled and filming was set to end in late January. Deadline reported that the sixth season order of 22 episodes was cut to 13 episodes.
Plainfield native Melissa McCarthy, who got her first lead playing teacher-turned-writer Molly Flynn, tweeted in December that she was "shocked and heartbroken when CBS canceled 'Mike and Molly.' I would have shot this show for 50 more years. I'll miss my second family."
The show's fifth season averaged 9.9 million viewers in live and same day viewing, down from more than 11 million viewers in its first season, according to media reports.
The series, which is filmed in California, was renewed for a sixth season early last year. An online petition to save the show had 248 supporters, as of Thursday morning.
"Mike and Molly" airs Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.
