BRIEF: Family-friendly musical to be staged for Easter on Oahu

April 01--If you're in Hawaii for Easter, a Waikiki shopping center is offering family-friendly musical theater free of charge.

"Honu by the Sea" is to be staged at the Royal Hawaiian Center along Kalakaua Avenue.

Through original songs written by Hawaiian composer Johnson Enos, the musical shares the story of an underwater community imperiled by pollution.

The main character, a teenage surfer named Kainoa, is granted a wish to spend a day beneath the waves. He meets Honu, a sea turtle, who guides him through an undersea adventure.

Kainoa and the audience members learn how careless humans are unknowingly endangering the fragile ocean environment.

The colorful cast includes a crab named Shaka, an octopus named Hula Hoop and a seahorse called Kapper.

"Honu by the Sea" is scheduled to be performed at the shopping center's outdoor gathering spot, the Royal Grove, at 2 p.m. Sunday. Seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive early.
