Jan. 20--Not afraid of the cold, The Factory Theater is moving 7 miles north.
The storefront company known for presenting original wacky work will leave its current home, the Prop Thtr in Avondale, and move to Rogers Park next season, a spokesman for the theater said on Monday.
Its new location is a storefront on Howard Street (1621-23) on the Chicago-Evanston border, two blocks east of the Howard CTA station. The theater will present the first show of its 2015-16 season, "Zombie Broads," there in the fall.
Factory has signed a five-year lease, and its new home is being redesigned by architect Thomas Hickey to accommodate an 80-seat thrust theater. The company plans to rent out the space to other theaters for rehearsal and performances when not in-use.
This is a homecoming of sorts for Factory. Before its decade-long residency at the Prop Thtr began in 2004, the 22-year old company performed in a different space in Rogers Park from 1992 to 1999. Between 1999 and 2004, the theater was itinerant.
Factory is in the midst of a capital campaign to cover all the costs of its remodel.
