BRIEF: Facebook beats Twitter when it comes to job hunting

Sept. 01--Want a job? LinkedIn and Facebook might help you land one, but Twitter and Instagram are less likely to.

Two-thirds of employers have hired candidates sourced through social media sites, according to a survey released Tuesday by the Society for Human Resource Management.

A presence on Pinterest, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter wasn't important to landing a job, according to the 400 human resources professionals surveyed in July. Instead, job seekers should focus on LinkedIn and professional or associations' social networking sites, followed by a presence on Facebook, blogs and Google Plus.

Careers where a social media presence is very important include communications, marketing, sales and advertising, survey respondents said. A social media presence is less important for people seeking hourly jobs, or ones in transportation or construction.

To land a job, survey respondents suggested filling out a full profile, including education and skills, making frequent updates and including a professional head shot.
