BRIEF: Extra ambulances called to West Side blaze; firefighter hurt

Jan. 07--Fire crews asked for ambulances at a West Side fire Wednesday morning after firefighters there found occupants of the building outside, according to officials.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital with undisclosed injuries.

An EMS Plan 1, which sent six ambulances, was called after crews started arriving, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

None of the occupants was injured, but they kept warm inside fire equipment while crews worked to extinguish the blaze.

The fire was reported about 9:20 a.m. in the basement of a three-story brick apartment building in the 1500 block of South Kostner Avenue. It was extinguished about 9:45 a.m.

A firefighter was injured and taken to Rush Universty Medical Center, where his condition had stabilzied.

A Fire Department spokesman refused to discuss the nature of the firefighter's injuries, citing privacy issues.
