BRIEF: Ex-USC DC Clancy Pendergast to coach 49ers linebackers

Feb. 09--Former USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast has joined the San Francisco 49ers staff as a linebackers coach, the team announced.

Pendergast was the Trojans defensive coordinator and secondary coach in 2013 and helped the Trojans rank No. 1 statistically in the Pac-12 Conference.

Pendergast was not retained by Coach Steve Sarkisian, who hired Justin Wilcox as defensive coordinator. Pendergast did not coach in college or the NFL last season.

Pendergast, 47, reportedly interviewed to become defensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, a job that went to former USC player and linebackers coach Joe Barry.

Pendergast was defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals from 2004 to 2008 and for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.

He was defensive coordinator for three seasons at California before joining former USC coach Lane Kiffin's staff.
