Ex-Ingleside teacher accused of molesting girl extradited from Bosnia

Dec. 31--A former teacher in north suburban Ingleside is being extradited from Bosnia to the United States to face sexual assault charges.

Michael R. Vucic is accused of assaulting a girl in 2012 while teaching at Gavin South Middle School in Ingleside. He is charged with predatory criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual assault.

Authorities said he fled the United States in August, was found hiding in Bosnia and was arrested in September.

Vucic, 41, was to be escorted by U.S. marshals to Washington, D.C. Wednesday and placed in federal custody in Dulles, Va. before being extradited to Illinois, officials said.

"There are processes he has to go through," said Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose. "He can either waive extradition or fight it. One way or another he'll be back in Illinois."

The process could take anywhere from a few days to a month, depending on what happens in a Virginia courtroom, said Rose.

"This has just been a long drawn out process because there were so many attempts made by him not to come here," Rose said. "We are starting the next leg of that process."

Three other former Gavin teachers -- John Keehan of Elgin, April Courtney of Wauconda and Michael Lanners of Lake Villa -- have pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failure to report suspected child abuse.

Courtney and Lanners are scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 8, and Keehan's next appearance is Feb. 2.
