BRIEF: Evaluation time for Cubs before first cuts

March 13--LAS VEGAS -- The Chicago Cubs' split-squad games Friday and Saturday will give officials plenty of time to evaluate before making their first round of cuts from a 60-player spring training roster.

The Cubs are expected to make anywhere from five to 10 cuts. Manager Joe Maddon will manage the team Friday in Mesa following the expected birth of his granddaughter Carson.

It will be a homecoming for Kris Bryant when the Cubs play the Oakland Athletics at Cashman Field in a night game. Bryant has hit four home runs, including two against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday.
