BRIEF: Englewood traffic stop yields 23 pounds of marijuana

Feb. 14--A man was charged with possession of marijuana after police pulled him over in the Englewood neighborhood Friday and discovered about 23 pounds of the drug inside of his SUV.

Alexander Brown, 39, of the 9500 block of South Paxton Avenue, was charged with having more than 5,000 grams of marijuana and cited with one traffic violation, police said in a news release.

About 7:45 p.m. Friday, Englewood District officers stopped a 2008 Chevy Tahoe on the 1000 block of West Marquette Road after a minor traffic violation, police said. When officers approached the SUV, they saw a clear plastic bag protruding from a black book bag in the rear seat. Police said the plastic bag contained marijuana.

The officers immediately arrested Brown and found another bag containing marijuana inside the Tahoe. In total, police said more then 23 pounds, with an estimated street value of $64,000, was found.

Brown was scheduled to appear Saturday for a bond hearing.
