June 07--Engine trouble forced a small private plane with four people aboard to make an emergency landing Saturday night on a highway south of San Jose, authorities reported. No one was injured.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the single-engine aircraft came down shortly after 11 p.m. on the southbound shoulder of U.S. 101 immediately south of Coyote Creek Golf Drive in Morgan Hill.
The pilot of the Piper PA-28 reported that the plane's engine quit, forcing him to search for a safe place to land, authorities said.
Because one wing jutted into a traffic lane, the CHP closed the two southbound lanes for almost two hours before a tow truck removed the plane from the highway.
Authorities said the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the landing.
