BRIEF: Emergency crews rescue man from Lake Michigan

Jan. 18--A police officer was able to keep a man from sinking below the icy waters of Lake Michigan near Oak Street Beach Sunday afternoon until more help arrived to rescue the man, a witness said.

Chicago Police and Fire Department crews were called to near Oak Street and the lakefront about 1 p.m.

The Police Marine Unit responded and crews were able to pull a man from the water, said police spokesman Officer Veejay Zala. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment, Zala said.

A witness said a beat officer grabbed the man and kept him from becoming submerged, until other rescue crews arrived and were able to help pull the man from the water.
