BRIEF: Responders lead apartment residents to safety during West Side fire

Oct. 03--No one was injured in a fire in the South Austin neighborhood Friday night after firefighters and police led people out of the building to safety.

The fire started about 5:15 p.m. and was extinguished in about 20 minutes, according to a Fire Department spokesman.

The fire was in an occupied three-story apartment building near Madison Street and Lavergne Avenue.

Initial information relayed to firefighters was that people were trapped in the building, but it turned out not to be the case, and crews from a fire engine led people out of the building through smoky hallways to safety, the spokesman said. A spokeswoman for the Police Department said officers arrived before firefighters and led people to safety.

Information on how the fire started was not immediately available.
