BRIEF: Emanuel taps former federal prosecutor to head Chicago Police Board

June 01--Mayor Rahm Emanuel says he has chosen a former federal prosecutor to head the Chicago Police Board, which determines whether to take disciplinary action against officers charged with wrongdoing.

A statement from the mayor's office said Emanuel plans to nominate Lori Lightfoot for the post Monday. She will replace Demetrius Carney, who has headed the board since 1996.

Lightfoot, currently a partner at the law firm Mayer Brown, was among those considered for U.S. attorney after Patrick Fitzgerald left in 2012.

She has held several city posts, including the chief administrator of the Chicago Police Department's former Office of Professional Standards, which investigated police-involved shootings, allegations of excessive force and other alleged misconduct by police officers.

The police board is made up of nine members and is responsible for deciding cases when the Police Department seeks to fire or otherwise discipline officers.

The police board also hears cases in which the Police Department and the Independent Police Review Authority -- which replaced the Office of Professional Standards -- disagree on how an officer should be disciplined.
