BRIEF: Emanuel laughs off boos at Blackhawks rally

June 18--Mayor Rahm Emanuel didn't escape some boos at Thursday's Blackhawks rally at Soldier Field.

Booing politicians at sporting events is a time-honored national tradition. While the mayor didn't open himself up to a negative crowd reaction by making a speech, Blackhawks CEO John McDonough thanked Emanuel for helping stage the parade and rally marking the team's third Stanley Cup in six years.

That drew boos from the Soldier Field crowd. The camera cut to Emanuel, who was on the stage behind McDonough. The mayor, clad in a gray Blackhawks T-shirt, laughed it off.

Emanuel managed to avoid getting booed at the last Blackhawks rally in Grant Park in 2013. Back then, the mayor stepped to the microphone with no introduction, said a few words and stepped away before the crowd had much time to react. Then-Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn didn't have the same luck. Announcer Pat Foley introduced Quinn, and the boos rained down upon him.

New Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner was at the rally, wearing a dark Blackhawks sweater. He wasn't introduced and didn't make a speech, so he escaped a crowd reaction.
