BRIEF: Emanuel calls on opponents to release tax returns

Jan. 22--A month out from the Feb. 24 city election, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has called on his four opponents to release five years worth of full tax returns.

Steve Mayberry, the mayor's campaign spokesman, said Emanuel has released his return each year he's been in office. He called it a "time-honored tradition" and "a sign that you will be transparent with the voters."

Ald. Bob Fioretti, 2nd, quickly responded that he is willing to release his returns but questioned why the mayor was making the request just a month before the election. "Sounds like someone is worried about the February election," said Michael Kolenc, spokesman for Fioretti.

There was no immediate response from the campaigns of Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, businessman Willie Wilson or perennial candidate William "Doc" Walls.
