BRIEF: Emanuel agrees to meet challengers 5 times

Jan. 12--Mayor Rahm Emanuel will meet his challengers in five candidate forums ahead of the Feb. 24 city election, his campaign said Monday.

Senior campaign adviser David Spielfogel confirmed that Emanuel will particpate in five forums: the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board endorsement session, Jan. 27; the Sun-Times Editorial Board endorsement session, date to be announced; WTTW-Ch. 11 "Chicago Tonight" forum, Feb. 4; WLS-Ch. 7/Univision/League of Women Voters candidate debate, Feb. 5; WBBM-Ch. 2/WVON-AM 1690/Urban League candidate debate, Feb. 10.

In recent weeks, mayoral challenger Ald. Bob Fioretti, 2nd, had challenged all the major candidates in the race for mayor to commit to participating in debates. Other candidates include Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, businessman Willie Wilson and community activist William "Dock" Walls.

Spielfogel said the five candidate forums are one more than Emanuel participated in during the 2011 campaign.
