BRIEF: Elgin man facing eviction charged after claiming to have bomb, police say

Jan. 05--An Elgin man was charged Tuesday after telling sheriff's deputies serving an eviction order that he had a bomb, which police say turned out to be a battery with some wires taped to it.

Officers arrived in the 600 block of Forest Avenue about 9 a.m. to serve the eviction order, Lt. Pat Gengler of the Kane County sheriff's office said.

The resident, who speaks Polish, came outside and placed the device on the ground and said "bomb" to the officers, Gengler said. They radioed for a Polish-speaking officer. That officer came to the scene and talked with the man.

The officers sent a photo of the battery to the bomb squad, which determined it almost certainly was not explosive, Gengler said. However, bomb squad officers responded to the scene as a precaution, he said.

Piotr Dutkiewicz, 51, was charged with felony counts of threatening a public official and disorderly conduct, officials said.
