Dec. 04--Veggie sandwich: Vegetarian bar food is a bit of an oxymoron. Meatless fare at most drinking establishments often begins and ends with mozzarella sticks, a veggie burger, a house salad and just maybe a mound of cheese curds (which seem to be having a moment on Chicago menus). The Butcher's Tap, an upscale Lakeview tavern formerly called Wheel House, is finally providing creative and considerable options for vegetarian diners. Appetizers include whipped hummus with pickled red peppers, buratta with sourdough and a plate of artisanal cheeses -- to which generous vegetarians may add charcuterie for carnivore friends. The bar's must-try entree is the simply named veggie sandwich ($10). Lettuce, arugula and field mushrooms provide a much-needed crunch, while hefty peppers, tomatoes and red onions make the simple sub feel quite substantial. A wonderful mix of fresh, nutty pesto spread and a heavy dose of tart, creamy goat cheese add bold flavors and leave a tangy aftertaste. The only drawback is the soft Italian bread, which can be a tad chewy. 3553 N. Southport Ave., 773-325-0123, thebutcherstap.com.
