No drama for Notre Dame on national signing day

Feb. 04--Notre Dame kept up with the Joneses on Wednesday morning, when two players with that last name -- Jamir and Tony -- signed letters of intent on national signing day.

The Irish added another Jones, three-star inside linebacker Jonathan Jones, who picked the Irish over Michigan on Wednesday morning.

Jonathan Jones, a 6-foot, 225-pounder out of Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, announced his decision as letters of intent rolled in.

"Leadership-wise, intelligence-wise, he's Joe Schmidt," Notre Dame running backs coach Autry Denson said.

Jones' commitment came not long after the Irish learned they missed out on five-star linebacker Ben Davis, who chose Alabama over Notre Dame, among others.

"We let one get away, didn't we?" said Denson, who added that he can't wait to get back to Alabama to recruit. The day started early in South Bend when walk-on Mick Assaf took to Twitter to announce his commitment. Assaf is a 6-foot, 180-pound safety/receiver from Atlanta, Ga.

Still, there were no surprise decommitments Wednesday for Notre Dame, which signed all 24 players it expected to.

Brian Kelly was pleased to have a drama-free day.

"Everybody should try it once in their career," he said.

Offensive lineman Tommy Kraemer was the first to sign his national letter of intent, at 6:01 a.m. Fellow lineman Parker Boudreaux followed shortly after, prompting associcate head coach Mike Denbrock to tell him:

"Parker, you might be the only guy in America who's not happy to have this process over."

Notre Dame target Caleb Kelly, a five-star linebacker, committed to Oklahoma. Five-star receiver Demetris Robertson, another target, has not yet announced his decision.
