BRIEF: Drug suspect in San Diego dies while being taken to jail, police say

Aug. 30--REPORTING FROM SAN DIEGO -- San Diego police are investigating the death of a 42-year-old man who collapsed as he was being arrested on drug charges, police said Sunday.

The incident began shortly after midnight when police responded to a call about a man "trying to jump a fence and causing a disturbance" outside a drug rehabilitation center in the Grant Hill neighborhood, according to police.

The man was taken into custody on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs and possession of drugs, said Lt. Manuel Del Toro. He was "cooperative and no force was used," Del Toro said.

As he was being driven to county jail in downtown San Diego, he was found unconscious and not breathing. Jail staff attempted life-saving measures and the man was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was declared dead at 5 a.m.

The man's name has not been released.
