BRIEF: Driver dies in crash after exiting forest preserve near Zion

April 26--An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday on a 66-year-old Bristol, Wis., man killed in a collision this week as he drove out of the Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve in unincorporated Zion on Route 173 just east of Route 41.

Lake County Sheriff's deputies responded to a crash with injuries at 5:45 p.m. Monday at the entrance of the forest preserve, said Det. Christopher Covelli. A preliminary investigation by the Technical Crash Investigations Unit found the 66-year-old, who has not been identified, was driving a 2007 Cadillac CTS and was exiting the preserve.

For unknown reasons, Covelli said, the Cadillac came to a stop on Route 173 and was hit on the driver's side by a 2001 Ford Expedition being driven westbound on Route 173 by a 51-year-old Beach Park man.

According to Covelli, the Wisconsin man was transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead. The Beach Park man was taken to Lake Forest Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Autopsy results were not immediately available, and toxicology results can take more than a week. The accident remains under investigation by the crash investigation unit.
