BRIEF: Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI in deadly Highland Park collision

March 08--A suspected drunk driver was apparently speeding through a residential street in Highland Park when he veered into the opposing lane and collided with another vehicle, killing its driver, police said.

The 24-year-old driver of the Chevy Camaro was "found to be under the influence" and has been arrested and booked on a charge of suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman said. He was not immediately identified.

Witnesses told police that the Camaro was going about 80 mph in the seconds before the head-on collision near the intersection of Marmion Way and Museum Drive about 10 p.m. Saturday.

Eisenman said the impact "instantly killed" the driver of a Hyundai Elantra traveling in the opposite direction. Pending notification of next of kin, the victim is being identified only as a 68-year-old man.

The driver of the Camaro fractured his leg and suffered head trauma, but Eisenman said he was in good condition Sunday.

"He's fine," she said.
