BRIEF: Drink This: 'Girlfriend' cocktail is waiting at The Drinkingbird

Dec. 14--Like the dipping toy that gives the bar its name, The Drinkingbird is charmingly retro, with nods to 1960s Americana kitsch in its food, drinks and decor. But, tucked on the menu with cocktails like an Old Fashioned and a negroni (granted, each modernized slightly) is an odd bird: the Su Novia ($10), a short, froth-topped cocktail on the rocks, with a slice of fresh cucumber as garnish.

Though the drink is unassuming in its presentation, the curious taste that springs from mixing Tromba Reposada Tequila, Ancho Reyes' Ancho Chile Liqueur, freshly squeezed lime juice, coconut cream, cucumber and a dusting of sea salt is a heady play of contrasts, unusual and unforgettable.

The name of the cocktail, written in Spanish, translates to "your girlfriend" in English; chef and general manager Chris Lovett says it came from an inside joke with his bartenders. And although other slyly named tonics at this Lincoln Park hideaway are worth a jaunt, like Door No. 1 and Connect the Dots, the sweet and spicy Su Novia is a keeper. 2201 N. Clybourn Ave., 773-472-9920, www.drinkingbirdchicago.com.
