BRIEF: Drink This: Cheerwine alert! Find the Carolina favorite in ice cream at Buck's

Feb. 01--Who says you can't enjoy an ice cream float when it's cold? At Buck's Chicken Biscuits in Wicker Park, the Cheerwine float ($6) -- a treacly cascade of soda over rich ice cream -- practically demands to be guzzled, no matter the temperature.

Plus, as any Southeasterner will tell you: You don't pass up a chance to drink Cheerwine. The super-carbonated cherry soda, a staple in North Carolina, is sold at a handful of places in the Midwest.

It's all part of the comfort food you'll find at Buck's, says managing partner Matt Mering, who calls Cheerwine a "true Southern delicacy."

To make the float, chefs scoop housemade vanilla bean ice cream into a mason jar, then top it with a stream of the bubbly, burgundy-hued soft drink. Simple, sweet and delicious -- and, if you grew up in the Southeast, in a nostalgic class of its own. 1700 W. Division St., 773-384-9700, www.buckschicago.com.
