BRIEF: Double Door facing eviction by landlord again

Dec. 03--Double Door, a Wicker Park club that helped propel the careers of the Smashing Pumpkins and Liz Phair, is facing eviction by its landlord again.

The venue's lease expired Oct. 31. The landlord filed a complaint Nov. 3 in Cook County Circuit Court seeking Double Door's eviction from 1572 N. Milwaukee Ave., occupancy payments from Nov. 1 and attorney fees.

"Our hope is that they agree to vacate peacefully. Absent that, we'll go to trial," Bonita L. Stone, an attorney for the landlord, told the Tribune on Thursday.

An attorney for Double Door filed a motion Thursday before Cook County Judge Ketki Shroff Steffen to change the judge in the case. Representatives for the club declined to comment to the Tribune.

Double Door management squared off against landlords Harry and Brian Strauss in court in 2005 over lease troubles before a multiyear agreement was reached. The club, which has been hosting shows since 1994, has dates booked into March, according to the club's online calendar.
