BRIEF: Detectives: Man tried to kidnap boy on Southwest Side

Feb. 13--Police are warning parents in the West Elsdon neighborhood about a man who tried to kidnap an elementary school-age boy Thursday morning.

The boy, whose exact age was not released but who was described as a elementary school student, was walking to school in the 5700 block of South Keeler Avenue about 8:15 a.m. when a man went up to him, according to an alert issued by Area Central detectives Thursday.

The man tried to grab the boy, but the boy was able to struggle free and return home, police said.

The man was described as white, between the ages of 55 and 60, standing between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-8, and weighing 165 to 175 pounds. He had "longer" gray hair and was unshaven. At the time he grabbed the boy, the man was wearing a gray stocking hat, a black jacket and black Converse shoes, police said.

Anyone with information on the attempted kidnapping is asked to call detectives at 312-747-8380.
