BRIEF: Detectives investigate fatal shooting in Athens Village

Sept. 20--A man was shot and killed in the Athens Village community of unincorporated south Los Angeles County, authorities said Sunday.

The shooting occurred a little before 1 a.m. Sunday in the 140 block of West 131st Street, said L.A. County Sheriff's Deputy Chrystal Hernandez.

Paramedics rushed the unidentified man to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, Hernandez said.

"Detectives are still there investigating," Hernandez said. "Hopefully, we will have information for the public about a suspect description soon."

Authorities said the victim was a 55-year-old who was approached by the suspect on the street. Following an argument, the suspect shot the victim in the upper torso. The suspect was then seen running north through a nearby alley.

Sheriff's homicide detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the shooting death to call them at (323) 890-5500.
