BRIEF: Deported sex offender accused of reentering U.S. from Mexico border

March 21--A convicted sex offender who was deported six years ago was arrested on Sunday trying to reenter the United States through the Mexican border with Southern California, officials said.

The man, a 35-year-old citizen of El Salvador, was stopped Sunday morning walking on U.S. soil near a border fence near Mount Signal Road when agents with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's El Centro station stopped him, officials said.

A background check showed the man was convicted of sexually abusing a minor in Texas in 2009, authorities said. Agents booked him at Imperial County jail, where he is expected to be held until he is charged with reentering the country after removal, the agency said.

El Centro border protection agents have arrested eight convicted sex offenders in connection with attempted reentry into the country this fiscal year, officials said.
