BRIEF: DePaul women take soccer conference title

Nov. 01--In bizarre and difficult weather, Rockford's Abby Reed tied a DePaul goal scoring record as her team earned the first women's soccer conference title in the program's 19-year history with a 3-0 win over St. John's Friday afternoon at Wish Field.

Reed, a sophomore transfer from Indiana State, scored twice to give her 12 for the season, equaling the school single-season record set by Julianne Sitch in 2003.

Freshman Alexa Ben of Schaumburg had her ninth goal of the season as the 8th-ranked Blue Demons (15-0-3) handed St. John's (10-7-1) its first Big East road loss of the year. Ben also had an assist, her 10th of the season, equaling Erin Walter's season school record from 2004.

The game, played in rain, sleet and winds gusting up to 40 mph, was delayed 30 minutes by lightning.

DePaul has a first round bye in next week's Big East tournament. Its next match is in Friday's semifinals at St. John's.
