DePaul student beaten in attempted robbery on CTA Blue Line

April 30--A 19-year-old DePaul University student was beaten by a man who tried to take her cellphone Thursday morning on a CTA Blue Line train on the West Side.

About 10:15 a.m., the woman was a passenger on a train traveling in the 3200 block of West Congress Parkway when she was approached by a man and a woman at the Kedzie/Harrison stop, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago police spokesman.

The man attempted to take her cellphone, but the woman struggled to stop him. He then began to beat her in an attempt to make her let go of the phone, Estrada said. The victim, Jessica Hughes, told WGN-TV, the woman the man was with also beat her, causing a broken nose.

After they were unsuccessful, the man and the woman fled the train at the Kedzie/Homan station.

Hughes, who suffered several injuries, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was listed in good condition, Estrada said.

The suspect was with a woman with a small stature, and was described as a black man with a medium complexion, black hair and brown eyes. He was about 6 feet tall and weighed about 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.

Police were working to obtain possible video of the attack. Anyone with information should call 911.
