Oct. 07--A legislative panel has recommended that Democrat Rep. Frank Mautino serve as the new state auditor general, who oversees how tax dollars are spent.
The Legislative Audit Commission on Tuesday voted 11-1 in favor of Mautino of Spring Valley, the former co-chair of the panel. The matter now goes to the full House and Senate, where lawmakers would have to approve of the pick by a 3/5ths vote.
If approved, Mautino would replace longtime Auditor General Bill Holland, who will retire at the end of the year.
Mautino, a budget expert for House Democrats, was chosen from a pool of four finalists. They included Mary Modelski, a division chief for Internal Audit for Alameda County, Calif; Rep. Elaine Nekritz, D-Northbrook, a chief negotiator on pension issues; and Larry Sanders of downstate Marion, general counsel for the Rend Lake Conservancy District.
