BRIEF: Death of woman who fell at UIC ruled suicide

May 12--A 21-year-old north suburban woman who died early Friday after plunging from a public stairwell connected to a University of Illinois at Chicago building has been identified, officials said.

An examination Saturday determined Yuliya Fedorova, of the 20500 block of Margaret Avenue in Lincolnshire, died of blunt force trauma of the head and neck from a jump from height, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Fedorova's death was ruled a suicide, according to the medical examiner's office.

Just after 4 a.m. Friday, crews responded to the UIC building at 1007 W. Harrison St. for reports of a woman who fell, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

The woman was taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where she was pronounced dead at 5:38 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

A spokeswoman for UIC said the woman was not affiliated with the university. The woman was inside an open-air stairwell connected to the building that is open to the public, the spokeswoman said. The stairwell leads to an outdoor green space on the UIC building.
