BRIEF: Dave's Italian Kitchen closes after 44 years in Evanston

April 12--Dave's Italian Kitchen, which has operated in Evanston for more than 44 years, unexpectedly closed Monday. No advance warning was given to customers or employees. A message on the restaurant's website related the news: "We're Closed Forever! Thank You!"

The Italian American mainstay at 1635 N. Chicago Ave. has a strong following in the community and with local Northwestern University students. Hundreds of messages have poured onto Dave's Facebook page expressing shock and offering remembrances.

We've attempted to reach out to owners Dave and Ellen Glatt for comment and will update if we hear anything. Dave Glatt left this comment on the restaurant's Facebook page: "Sorry I can't share serious thoughts now; it's just too soon."

For one piece of the restaurant's long history, check out the Tribune's 1989 review of Dave's.
