BRIEF: Darien police search for gunman after man wounded in Wal-Mart

Dec. 04--Police are searching for a gunman who wounded a man in a Darien Wal-Mart on Thursday night.

The shooting was not random, Darien police Chief Greg Thomas told reporters outside the store in the 2100 block of 75th Street in the west suburb.

Three to five shots were fired and the man was hit in the shoulder, Thomas said. The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, he said.

Authorities did not have a detailed description of the suspect.

More than 20 police, fire and state police vehicles gathered in front of the strip mall shortly after 6 p.m.

People were told to leave a nearby Aldi, according to a shopper who would not give his name. The parking lot at the Wal-Mart was surrounded by yellow police tape.

"We don't need this here," said Darien resident Sara Gonzalez, 26, who was shopping at a nearby PetsMart. "All these gun incidents have me on edge. You just don't expect something like this to happen on a Thursday night in a small town like Darien."

Sullivan and Ruzich are freelance reporters. WGN-TV contributed.
