BRIEF: Dad gets 40 years in shooting death of 10-year-old son

Nov. 26--A Hammond man was sentenced to 40 years in prison Tuesday for voluntary manslaughter after he admitted fatally shooting his 10-year-old son more than three years ago.

Jason DeGroot Sr., who pled guilty but mentally ill to the charge in September in exchange for dismissal of a murder charge, told Lake County, Ind., Judge Diane Ross Boswell: "I'm really not a monster. I don't know why, what happened that night."
