Cubs trim spring roster by 9; Neil Ramirez pushing for roster spot

March 25--The Chicago Cubs sent nine non-roster players to their minor league camp, trimming the spring roster from 45 to 36 players.

The players cut were pitchers Brandon Gomes, Jean Machi and Ryan Williams; infielders Jesus Guzman and Kris Negron; and outfielders Albert Almora, John Andreoli, Matt Murton and Juan Perez.

Manager Joe Maddon wouldn't say publicly whether the Cubs have committed to carrying 12 pitchers on their opening day roster, adding that the recent effectiveness of reliever Neil Ramirez is raising some questions.

"Neil has pitched very well," Maddon said of Ramirez, who pitched a scoreless inning Thursday against the San Francisco Giants. "He might force us to do something, but we're still discussing. It's not done yet."

Ramirez is out of minor league options. The Cubs could lose him to waivers if they don't put him on the 25-man roster, or trade him. Several teams are interested in Ramirez, who would be the eighth reliever in the bullpen if the Cubs keep him.

"Without tipping our hand, I don't want to give false hope to anyone," Maddon said. "He's pitching well."

Infielder Tommy La Stella, who has been nagged by a sore calf, and outfielder Matt Szczur (oblique) are expected to come off the bench and play in Friday's game against Milwaukee.

Almora, the Cubs' top pick in the 2012 draft, batted .242 but made a strong impression on Maddon with his overall play and demeanor.

"He's turning into a complete player," Maddon said. "He's hit the ball well. But beyond that, his defense has been great. His route running has been very good. He can be inpactful. We talked about all that stuff. His game has really elevated."

Williams is scheduled to start one of the Cubs' final three exhibition games, Maddon said.
