BRIEF: Cubs' top pitching prospects all arms and ears

March 03--MESA, Ariz. -- Spending time in major league spring training camp is more than just trying to impressive the coaching staff for the Cubs' top prospects.

C.J. Edwards and Pierce Johnson have gained valuable advice while preparing for their 2015 season in the upper levels of the minor leagues.

"We're going to give them early appearances and try to get them off to good starts for their 2015 seasons," Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio said. "But we've got guys in this clubhouse that have been there through the ups and downs as a young player and know what things to expect.

"I saw Jon Lester talking to C.J., and it was a great conversation about keeping it simple. Remember what got you here. Pitch to your strengths and not necessarily worrying about scouting reports. We'll briefly touch these guys before each game because we got notes on all these teams. But we're trying to find out as a staff and as teammates what these guys can and cannot do. So that's a learning experience for us as a coaching staff."
