May 12--Despite a nine-game hitting streak, Ben Zobrist won't start Wednesday night as the Chicago Cubs try to return to their winning ways against the San Diego Padres in the second game of a split doubleheader at Wrigley Field.
Zobrist, 34, went 2-for-3 with two walks in a 7-4 loss in the first game of the doubleheader that snapped the Cubs' eight-game winning streak.
Zobrist extended his hitting streak to nine games and is batting .469 during that stretch and has reached base safely in 19 consecutive games.
Tommy La Stella, who is 6-for-11 on this homestand, will start in place of Zobrist at second base. Javier Baez will start at shortstop in place of Addison Russell, who went 2-for-4 with a double in the first game.
Jorge Soler will get his second consecutive start in left field as he faces Padres left-hander Drew Pomeranz.
