March 11--The Mariners beat the visiting Cubs 10-8 Thursday thanks to some shoddy defensive play and Jon Lester's ineffective outing. After climbing back from a four-run deficit to take an 8-7 lead, they gave up three in the eighth for their seventh straight loss.
At the plate
Javier Baez hit a two-run home run. Jorge Soler and Kristopher Negron also homered.
On the mound
In his spring debut, Lester gave up six runs on seven hits, including a pair of infield hits in the three-run first.
In the field
Lester, David Ross and Negron made three errors over a four-batter span.
On the bases
Arismendy Alcantara was picked off first.
The quote
"If you're good and have a good bunch of players, you'll be good. And if you don't, you won't be good when the bells rings. I'm very confident we'll be good." -- manager Joe Maddon
