BRIEF: Cubs sign Tsuyoshi Wada to 1-year deal

Nov. 03--The Chicago Cubs agreed to terms Monday on a one-year contract with left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada.

Wada, 33, was one of the more pleasant surprises of the Cubs' season, posting a 4-4 record and 3.25 ERA in 13 starts. Wada was promoted in July from Triple-A Iowa, where he posted a 10-6 record and 2.77 ERA in 19 games and earned Pacific Coast League all-star honors.

The Cubs' rotation consists of Jake Arrieta, Kyle Hendricks, Travis Wood and Wada, with Edwin Jackson, Jacob Turner, Felix Doubront, Dan Straily and Dallas Beeler expected to compete for a spot. The Cubs also will be active in the free-agent market and are expected to be strong competitors to land marquee left-hander Jon Lester.

The Cubs and Wada reworked a deal after not picking up his $5 million option. Wada will receive $4 million with the chance to earn an additional $2 million in incentives.
