BRIEF: Cubs sign Munenori Kawasaki to minor league deal

Jan. 21--Former Blue Jays infielder Munenori "Muni" Kawasaki signed a minor league deal with the Cubs and received a non-roster invitation to spring training.

The 34-year-old Kawasaki, a left-handed hitter from Japan who plays second, short and third, has a career average of .234 over four seasons with the Mariners and Blue Jays, with one home runs and 50 RBI.

He hit .214 last year in Toronto with 2 RBIs in 28 at-bats.

Kawasaki was a fan favorite in Toronto for his wacky interviews, including a You Tube video where he explained he was eating bananas because "monkeys never cramp."

Kawasaki is unlikely to make the Cubs but will provide infield depth in the minors. The Cubs are expected to announce the rest of their non-roster invites in the next couple days.
