Jan. 27--The Cubs have pulled their Venezuelan Summer League team this year amid political, economic and safety concerns in the country, a team official confirmed Wednesday.
The league, which was down to four teams before the Cubs' departure, has canceled the 2016 season. The Tigers, Phillies and Rays had also fielded teams.
The Cubs official confirmed an MLB.com report that the team will continue to operate their academy and scout in Venezuela but instead will field two teams in the Dominican Summer League.
The Cubs top prospect, shortstop Gleyber Torres, signed with the club out of Venezuela in 2013.
